MLB: Detroit 8, Oakland 6

DETROIT, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Victor Martinez went 3-for-4 with a score-tying homer Tuesday and the Detroit Tigers went on to out-slug Oakland 8-6, forcing Game 5 in its AL division series.

Max Scherzer (2-0), making just his second relief appearance in five seasons, escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the top of the eighth to preserve the 5-4 lead and notched the decision as the Tigers avoided elimination, evening their ALDS at 2-2.

Detroit iced the contest with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Omar Infante's two-run double for an 8-4 advantage, and then held on to force a winner-take-all contest Thursday in Oakland.

Jhonny Peralta clubbed a three-run homer for the Tigers.

Jed Lowrie hit a two-run shot and finished with three RBI while Coco Crisp went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs score for the A's.
