MOSCOW, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin will preside over the start of the ceremonial Olympic torch relay run for the Sochi Winter Games.

Putin will attend Sunday's ceremony in Red Square when the flame that was lit in Athens officially begins its long trip to Sochi for the 2014 games.

Russia's R-Sport said the flame will be carried around Moscow for two days and then embark on a cross-country tour that includes a flight to the Kamchatka Peninsula on the Pacific coast.

The first torchbearer Sunday will be Anastasia Davydova, who has won five Olympic medals in synchronized swimming.

The flame will pass through more than 2,900 Russian towns on its winding trek to Sochi, where the games are scheduled to begin Feb. 7.
