NHL: Toronto 5, Ottawa 4 (SO)

TORONTO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Backup Jonathan Bernier entered the game in the second period Saturday and backstopped the Toronto to its third straight win, 5-4 over Ottawa in a shootout.

Starting goalie James Reimer was pulled in favor of Bernier after yielding four goals on 21 shots.

Bernier proceeded to blank the Senators the rest of the way, stopping all 15 shots he faced in regulation and overtime. He added two more saves in the tiebreaker as the Maple Leafs improved to 3-0-0 to begin a season for the third time in the last four years.

Toronto's Tyler Bozak and Mason Raymond each scored in the shootout while Raymond, Nazem Kadri, Joffrey Lupul and James van Riemsdyk registered goals in regulation.

Ottawa got a goal and two assists from Kyle Turris. Cory Conacher, Jared Cowen and Jason Spezza also scored for the Senators.

Craig Anderson made 38 saves for Ottawa, which fell to 1-0-1 on the young season.
