Slumping Dan Uggla left off Atlanta Braves' NLDS roster

ATLANTA, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Slumping Dan Uggla was left off the Atlanta Braves' roster Wednesday as they prepare to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

Uggla -- the Braves' highest-paid player at $13 million -- was batting just .179 with 22 home runs before being benched in favor of Elliot Johnson at second base in August.

Johnson is expected to start at second when the series starts Thursday.

Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez told The Atlanta Journal Constitution it was hard to break the news to Uggla and other players left off the NLDS roster.

"Yesterday might have been one of the hardest days I've had to experience as a major league manager," he said. "It's a difficult thing to take as a professional athlete when you compete on a high level.... You try to put the best roster you think will fit in a five-game series, and put your best 25 out there.

"Without getting into details on this and that, we feel like we put our best 25 out there to compete against the Dodgers."
