Ex-Browns QB Kosar charged with DWI

BEDFORD, Ohio, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar's driver's license was suspended for refusal to take a breath-alcohol test, a Bedford, Ohio, court clerk said.

Kosar, 49, was pulled over for speeding in Solon, Ohio, early Sunday, and a police officer who stopped him noted the smell of alcohol in the car. Kosar was unable to produce a driver's license and was unable to recite the alphabet during field sobriety tests, a report of the Bedford Municipal Court said.

When asked to take a breath-alcohol test, Kosar told the officer he was advised never to take one, the report said. Because he refused to take the test, his license was automatically suspended, said John Garmone, chief deputy clerk of the Bedford Municipal Court.

Kosar was charged with driving under the influence. He posted a $500 bond at Solon City Jail, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Tuesday.

Kosar was the Browns' starting quarterback beginning in 1986, and led the team to AFC championship games three times in four years.
