Jimmie Johnson gains ground in Sprint Cup Chase with Dover win

DOVER, Del., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson dominated at Dover International Speedway Sunday, winning the AAA 400 while enhancing his chances for a Sprint Cup championship.

Johnson led for 243-of-400 laps in taking a record eighth victory at Dover, passing Bobby Allison and Richard Petty in the record books.

With his fifth victory of the season and the 65th of his Sprint Cup Series career, Johnson gained on first-place Matt Kenseth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, cutting his lead from 18 points to eight.

Kenseth settled for a seventh-place finish after claiming the first two Chase events at Chicagoland and New Hampshire.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. shook off a pit-road penalty to finish second, making a late charge to end 0.5 seconds off the pace.

Joey Logano, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch rounded out the Top 5.
