TOKYO, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Petra Kvitova defeated Angelique Kerber in three sets Saturday and claimed the championship at the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament.

Kvitova, the No. 7-seed, overcame a down second set for a 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 win over the fifth-seeded Kerber. It was her 11th WTA title and evened her tournament finals appearances at 2-2 in 2013. Kvitova won at Dubai in February.

Kvitova finished off both of her break chances in taking the first set but Kerber rallied by winning nearly two-thirds of the points in the second to even the match.

Kvitova steadied her game in the third set, winning about 60 percent of the points on serve and saving two of the three break points she faced. She took more than half (14-of-26) of the points off Kerber's serve in the set and finished off two of her four break opportunities.

A series of upsets meant Kerber was the only seeded player Kvitova went against over the course of the tournament. She didn't drop a set until her semifinal Friday against Venus Williams.

Kerber fell to 2-5 in championship matches. She won twice early in 2012 but has lost four finals since then.

Kvitova collected $426,000 for winning the tournament, a check that pushed her career winnings to just less than $11 million. Kerber's runner-up share was $213,000, which put her career total at more than $4.5 million.
