Aaron Hernandez fiancee indicted on perjury charge

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Aaron Hernandez's fiancee has been indicted for perjury in the murder case against the former New England Patriots tight end, prosecutors said Friday.

Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter said in a statement Shayana Jenkins, 24, the mother of Hernandez' child, was charged with perjury.

Sutter also announced Hernandez's cousin, Tanya Singleton, 37, of Bristol, Conn., was indicted for conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact. Singleton was already under indictment for criminal contempt.

A third indictment announced Friday names Carlos Ortiz, 27, also of Bristol, on a charge of accessory to murder after the fact. Ortiz had pleaded not guilty to a gun charge in the case.

The release did not provide details on why the charges were brought.

Hernandez, 23, is accused of killing Odin Lloyd June 17 in an industrial park near Hernandez's home near Boston. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said Ortiz, a key witness against Hernandez, has changed his story.

Ortiz, who faces a weapons charge in the case, previously said he accompanied Hernandez, Lloyd and Ernest Wallace, 41, to the industrial park where Lloyd was killed. He said he remained in a car while Hernandez, Wallace and Lloyd got out, just before Lloyd was shot and killed.

However, at a bail hearing for Wallace, who is charged as an accessory after the fact of the killing, Ortiz said that he "does not think" Wallace got out of the car, The Boston Globe reported.

Sutter said after a hearing Thursday he does not think Ortiz's inconsistent story will weaken the case against Hernandez.

"Not at all," Sutter said.

A judge set Wallace's bail at $500,000. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Nov. 8.
