Berdych, No. 6 in the world rankings, defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-3 and avenged a three-set loss in India earlier this year in the players' first career meeting.
Berdych had 11 aces and didn't drop his serve in the match. He was particularly effective on first serves, winning 30-of-35 of those points when he was good on his first serve.
Sixth-seeded Feliciano Lopez topped Go Soeda 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 behind a 14-ace attack. Soeda managed one break in the first set but Lopez didn't allow him a break opportunity in the second set, losing only five points over five games serving.
Igor Sijsling also earned a place in the quarterfinals, edging Robin Haase 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Sijsling won 90-percent -- 27-of-30 -- of the points when serving in the third set.
The final first-round results saw fifth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny stop Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-2 while Denis Istomin needed just 60 minutes for a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Jeong Suk-young and Lu Yen-hsun took out Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes.
