Son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy indicted for murder

WOBURN, Mass., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Jared Remy, son of former Boston Red Sox player and broadcaster Jerry Remy, was indicted on murder charges Tuesday in the slaying of his girlfriend.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced a grand jury had charged Jared Remy, 35, with murder in the Aug. 15 stabbing death of Jennifer Martel, 27, in Waltham, Mass.

Remy was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and violating a restraining order.

Prosecutors accuse Remy of killing Martel two days after he had been arrested for allegedly pushing her. Martel had obtained a temporary restraining order against him after that incident.

Remy is to be arraigned Oct. 8.

Jerry Remy, a former Red Sox second baseman and color analyst for games on the New England Sports Network, took a leave of absence for the rest of the season.

Two days after the slaying, the elder Remy issued a statement expressing his "disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act. We are heartbroken."
