Rosol gains spot in Thailand Open second round

BANGKOK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- No. 8-seeded Lukas Rosol survived a three-set challenge Tuesday from Lukasz Kubot in advancing at the ATP's Thailand Open.

Rosol edged by Kubot 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) in a battle that saw 30 aces -- 16 by Rosol. There were only two breaks in the match, with Rosol converting the only break chance in the first set and Kubot getting the other in the second.

With neither player having a break in the final set, the match came down to the tiebreaker, where Rosol was able to pull away.

Roberto Bautista Agut earned a spot in the second round against top-seeded Tomas Berdych with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) decision over Marco Chiudinelli while Lukas Lacko defeated Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-2 to set up a pairing against No. 2-seeded Richard Gasquet.

Marinko Matosevic routed local wild-card entrant Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul 6-1, 6-1 in 43 minutes. Matosevic lost only four points in seven games serving and took 60 percent of the points when receiving serves.

Go Soeda got by Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Bernard Tomic advanced when, after Tomic had gone up 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 4-2 Ivo Karlovic retired, in Tuesday's other matches.
