Stenson now fourth in world golf rankings

VIRGINIA WATER, England, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Henrik Stenson won the FedEx Cup, $11.4 million and moved to No. 4 in the men's world golf rankings by winning the Tour Championship.

Stenson took the championship lead with a first-round score of 64 and led after every round. It was his 15th professional win. Just four of those have come on the PGA Tour but those are all big. He won the WGC Accenture Match Play in 2007, the Players Championship in 2009 and this year's Deutsche Bank Championship.

The Tour Championship comes with a $1.4 million first-place check and Stenson also collected a $10 million bonus for the FedEx Cup title.

Stenson opened the year 53rd in the world golf rankings but moves up two more spots from last week to fourth as of Monday. Steve Stricker tied for second and moves from ninth to No. 7 while 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, whose final-round 64 pulled him into a tie with Stricker, goes from 30th to No. 21 this week. He opened the year 809th.

Rory McIlroy drops two places to sixth and Stricker's move up pushed Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker both down one place to eighth and ninth, respectively.

Julien Quesne won the European Tour's Italian Open and bolts from 229th to No. 135 in the rankings.

Tiger Woods, despite a tie for 22nd at the Tour Championship, continues to lead the rankings. He has been atop the rankings for a total of 650 weeks. Only one other player (Greg Norman with 331 weeks) was No. 1 for more than 100 weeks.
