ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was stretchered off the field following a gruesome leg injury Monday during a game against Tampa Bay.
On the play in the seventh inning of the contest at Tropicana Field, Machado was rounding first base after recording an infield single and landed awkwardly on the bag, causing his left knee to buckle inward.
The 21-year-old all-star collapsed and had to be removed from the field on a cart, raising fears the injury to his leg could potentially be serious.
The team indicated on its official Twitter feed Machado is "being evaluated."
A former first-round draft pick, Machado leads the American League with 51 doubles. He was batting .283 with 14 home runs, 71 RBI and 88 runs scored.
