Oracle Team USA again staves off elimination with two wins

Sept. 22, 2013 at 8:02 PM   |   Comments

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Oracle Team USA staved off elimination with two key wins over Emirates Team New Zealand Sunday in the 34th America's Cup Final.

Facing an 8-3 deficit entering the day, Team USA needed to win six straight races to rally for an improbable victory, and got two of them Sunday on San Francisco Bay.

Nine points are needed to take the regatta.

In Race 14, the Americans led the entire way and notched a 23-second victory, and repeated the feat in Race 15, winning by 37 seconds after holding off a Kiwi charge on the second downwind leg.

Races 16 and (if necessary) 17 have been set for Monday.
