MLB: Seattle 3, Los Angeles Angels 2

Sept. 22, 2013 at 8:54 PM   |   Comments

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Justin Smoak belted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning Sunday, rallying the Seattle Mariners over the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.

With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth, Franklin Gutierrez led off with a single and was forced at second on a Kyle Seager grounder.

Two outs later, Smoak blasted a pitch from Angels starter C.J. Wilson into the left-field seats for his 18th homer of the season.

Mike Zunino also drove in a run for the Mariners, who avoided a three-game sweep.

Oliver Perez (3-3) earned the win in relief of Felix Hernandez, who struck out 10 in just four innings -- setting a major league record for most strikeouts in a start lasting four innings or less.

Wilson (17-7) yielded three runs on eight hits in an 8 1/3-inning start.

Kole Calhoun socked a solo homer for the Angels.
