Chicago's Sylvia Fowles voted top WNBA defensive player

CHICAGO, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, the team said.

Fowles, who plays center, received 21 of the 39 votes from the WNBA media and out-polled five time winner Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever.

Fowles was the league's leading rebounder with 369 and a per-game average of 11.5 boards. She was second in blocked shots with 2.44 per game.

Her first game of the season included a double-double of 24 points and 22 rebounds.
