Sunday's race will be the second in the 10-event series that will determine the year's Sprint Cup champion.
Matt Kenseth won the opening race of the Chase for the Championship last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway and moved eight points in front of Kyle Busch in the battle for the series title. Jimmie Johnson is in third place, 11 points out of the lead.
Newman, who is eighth in the points race, traveled around the New Hampshire track at 136.497 miles per hour for his second pole of the year. He has won the pole on this track seven times. Newman broke the qualifying record of 135.922 mph set by Brad Keselowski in July.
Kenseth was ninth fastest in qualifying.
