MLB: New York Mets 6, Philadelphia 4

Sept. 20, 2013 at 10:15 PM   |   Comments

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- David Wright's two-run homer helped New York build an early five-run lead Friday and the Mets held on to defeat Philadelphia 6-4.

Daniel Murphy singled home a run in the first before Wright delivered his blast. Andrew Brown added an RBI single in the third and Eric Young drove in another run with a base hit in the fourth to make it 5-0.

That gave the Mets enough of a cushion to survive a four-run Philadelphia fourth that featured a three-run double by Darin Ruf. Two of the Philadelphia runs were unearned.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-3) allowed four hits over six innings and struck out six to get the win. He made his sixth start since a return to the majors following six seasons with Boston.

LaTroy Hawkins needed just 11 pitches to work a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

Cole Hamels (8-14) struck out eight over seven innings but allowed six runs on 10 hits to suffer the loss.
