Burrow won his first ASP tour event of the season by besting fellow Australian Julian Wilson in the final heat by a score of 17.07 to 15.97 in the 2-to-4 foot waves at the famed Lower Trestles surf break on the Orange-San Diego County line.
"I felt like the good waves came my way and I was just in the zone," said Burrow, who now has an even dozen career ASP wins. "I was hoping to get things snowballing and I never felt like I put together my best surfing."
The win moved Burrow into fourth place in the ASP standings. Fanning failed to make it out of the fifth round, but his performance was enough to move him past American Kelly Slater into the lead in the points race.
Fanning, who also hails from Down Under, has 41,900 points after seven events this season. Slater trails with 40,700 and Jordy Smith of South Africa is in third.
