Pavlyuchenkova escapes upset, wins at KDB Korea Open

SEOUL, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova escaped the string of upsets Wednesday with a second-round victory at the KDB Korea Open tennis tournament in Seoul.

Pavlyuchenkova, seeded third, topped local wild-card entrant Lee Ye-ra 6-4, 6-1 behind five breaks. Pavlyuchenkova had seven break chances and took more than half (32-of-62) of the points off Lee's serve. She won two-thirds of the points off her own serve.

The other two seeded players on Wednesday's schedule both were beaten.

Irina-Camelia Begu took out No. 6-seeded Julia Goerges 6-4, 6-0. She put the match away in the second set when she dropped five points on serve and took 63 percent of the points overall.

Vera Dushevina was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over eighth-seeded Annika Beck with a pair of breaks in the first set and four in the seesaw second.

Also Wednesday, Lara Arruabarrena was a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 winner over Alexandra Dulgheru despite seven double faults and Francesca Schiavone topped Virginie Razzano 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3, losing four points on serve in the final set.
