N.Y. high school player dies of head injury

PORTVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A high school football player in western New York state died of injuries suffered in a weekend game, his family said.

Damon Janes, 16, was knocked out in a head-on collision with another player Friday night and died Monday, the family said in a written statement.

Janes played running back for Brocton Central High and was involved in a helmet-to-helmet collision in the third quarter of Friday's game against Westfield. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, WKBW-TV in Buffalo said.

Word of Janes' death triggered an outpouring of grief at Brocton Central and the entire Chautauqua County region, The (Buffalo) News said. The Internet was abuzz with messages of condolence and hundreds of students wore the school color green in his honor on Monday.
