New Zealand leads 7-1 after split with U.S. in America's Cup

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Emirates Team New Zealand won a hotly contested second race Sunday to go up 7-1 after Oracle Team USA won the early America's Cup race in San Francisco Bay.

New Zealand can win the cup with victories in two races Tuesday.

The Americans earned their first point with a victory in Race 9 Sunday, beating New Zealand by 47 seconds.

The second race was considerably closer, with New Zealand winning by 17 seconds.

Races 11 and 12 are scheduled for Tuesday, weather wind permitting. The first team to win nine points will win the cup.
