The mishap occurred when the New Zealand vessel ran into hydraulic problems and the starboard hull rose high into the air. The crew worked to restore hydraulic power and an inverted wing was eventually popped onto its track.
Despite Team USA's win in Saturday's only race, New Zealand still leads the defending champions 6-0 due to a two-point penalty imposed on the Americans -- which has now been erased.
The first team to nine points wins the regatta.
The competition resumes Sunday with Races 9 and 10.
