Team USA wins America's Cup Race 8 as N.Z. nearly capsizes

Sept. 15, 2013 at 12:24 AM   |   Comments

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Oracle Team USA won Saturday's Race 8 of the America's Cup Final after Emirates Team New Zealand nearly capsized its catamaran on the upwind leg.

The mishap occurred when the New Zealand vessel ran into hydraulic problems and the starboard hull rose high into the air. The crew worked to restore hydraulic power and an inverted wing was eventually popped onto its track.

Despite Team USA's win in Saturday's only race, New Zealand still leads the defending champions 6-0 due to a two-point penalty imposed on the Americans -- which has now been erased.

The first team to nine points wins the regatta.

The competition resumes Sunday with Races 9 and 10.
