MLB: San Diego 4, Atlanta 0

Sept. 15, 2013 at 5:59 PM

ATLANTA, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Rookie Burch Smith flirted with a no-hitter Sunday, dominating Atlanta through seven shutout innings in the San Diego Padres' 4-0 win over the Braves.

Smith (1-1) was working on a no-hitter until Braves pitcher Julio Teheran spoiled the bid with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth.

Instead, the rookie settled for his first major-league win. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the gem.

Chase Headley homered for a third straight day, Tommy Medica added a solo shot and Will Venable had three hits for the Padres, who took the rubber match of a three-game set.

Teheran (12-8) let in four runs on seven hits while striking out six over 6 2/3 innings for the Braves, whose magic number to clinch the National League East remained at four.
