MLB: Boston 9, New York Yankees 2

Sept. 15, 2013 at 11:56 PM   |   Comments

BOSTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Mike Napoli clubbed a two-run homer and Clay Buchholz went six innings Sunday to help the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 9-2 for a series sweep.

Napoli's blast in the first inning put Boston ahead 3-1 and American League East-leading Red Sox went on to collect 11 hits, dealing the Yankees' hopes for an AL wild-card berth a hard blow with a three-game series sweep.

Daniel Nava went 4-for-5 with an RBI while Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each drove in a pair of runs for the Red Sox, who reduced their magic number for clinching the AL East crown to four.

Buchholz (11-0) remained unbeaten on the season in his second start after missing more than three months with a strained neck. He limited New York to one unearned run on two hits, walking four and striking out three.

Ivan Nova (8-5) was battered for five runs (four earned) on six hits over four innings for the Yankees, who fell three games off the wild-card pace with Cleveland and Baltimore ahead of them.

Alex Rodriguez and Ichiro Suzuki each drove in a run for New York.
