Dutchman Joost Luiten edges Miguel Angel Jimenez in KLM playoff

Sept. 15, 2013 at 1:50 PM   |   Comments

ZANDVOORT, Netherlands, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Dutchman Joost Luiten thrilled his local boosters Sunday, besting Miguel Angel Jimenez in a one-hole playoff to capture the KLM Open in the Netherlands.

After coming up short on his approach shot on the extra hole, Jimenez went on to miss a par putt, but Luiten drained his own attempt to become the first Netherlands native to win the event since 2003.

Luiten -- who claimed his third career crown -- carded a 2-under 68 in the final round to end in a 12-under-268 tie with Jimenez (3-under 67) at Kennemer Golf & Country Club.

"I don't know what it means for Dutch golf, but I think it's pretty big," he said. "Maarten Lafeber won it in 2003 and that was huge, and to have another Dutch winner now I think it will help the game here and hopefully we can create more Dutch winners for this tournament."

Sharing third place at 9-under-par 271 were Ross Fisher, Gregory Havret (each 4-under 66s), three-time winner Simon Dyson (68) and Damien McGrane (69).

One shot further back at 8-under 273 was Julien Quesne (70).
