MLB: Chicago Cubs 5, Pittsburgh 4

Sept. 13, 2013 at 11:24 PM   |   Comments

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Anthony Rizzo's two-run homer in the seventh inning Friday brought the Chicago Cubs from behind to a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates overcame an early three-run deficit to take the lead, but could not hold on for what would have been their fifth straight win.

Jason Grilli (0-2) took the mound in the seventh for his first inning of work and retired the first two men he faced. Luis Valbuena, however, walked on a 3-2 pitch and Rizzo then hit a 1-0 offering from Grilli over the wall in right.

Pittsburgh put one runner on in each of its last three at-bats, but was eventually shut down by the Chicago bull pen.

Carlos Villanueva (6-8), the third of six Chicago pitchers, picked up the win by recording a lone out in the sixth. Kevin Gregg worked the ninth for his 32nd save.

Brian Bogusevic contributed a two-run Chicago homer in the fourth, but Pittsburgh came up with three solo blasts in the bottom of the inning from Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin and Garrett Jones.
