Ryan was batting a modest .192 in 87 games when he was dispatched to New York for a player to be named later; however, he is considered a solid defensive player who could spell Jeter, who has been struggling with injuries all season.
Should the Yanks reach the playoffs, Ryan would be left off the post-season roster, MLB TV reported, while Jeter would theoretically be more rested and recovered.
Ryan had seen his playing time in Seattle decline due to the play of Brad Miller, who was batting .260 Tuesday.
