KIEV, Ukraine, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A fight between about 40 English and 20 Ukrainian soccer fans prior to a World Cup qualifying match in Kiev, Ukraine, led to the stabbing of one, police said.

A group of English fans, in Kiev for the European qualifying matches of the World Cup, were attacked with knives Sunday by a Ukrainian group, leaving one man English fan stabbed, a second treated for a head injury and a third hospitalized with severe bruising, the London Evening Standard reported.

"Three British citizens ... were taken to hospital with wounds to the head and hands. After getting medical treatment they were taken back to their accommodation," a police spokesman said.

The British Foreign Office said it was aware of the incident and is providing "consular assistance." No arrests have been made.
