Lawsuit by former NFL players voluntarily dismissed

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A suit filed by more than 500 former National Football League players over use of their images in films and televisions programs, was voluntarily dismissed.

The plaintiffs opted out of a class action suit filed in Minnesota in a case involving the use, by the NFL Network and NFL Films, of their images in archival footage. They instead sued in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh, claiming they were due compensation for the use of film of their playing days.

Friday U.S. District Judge Paul A. Magnuson, the judge in the $50 million Minnesota case, issued an injunction indicating the Pittsburgh suit, and a similar one filed in New Jersey, were premature, and ordered both withdrawn "until this court has entered a final judgment" in the Minnesota case.
