Sebastian Vettel cruises to third career Italian Grand Prix win

MONZA, Italy, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel remained on track for a fourth consecutive Formula One world championship Sunday with a victory at the Italian Grand Prix.

Vettel surrendered the lead only once during a pit stop, otherwise breezing to his sixth win of the season. The Red Bull driver finished 5.4 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Germany's Vettel, who won the Italian event for the third time, increased his 2013 points total to 222 -- 53 more than Alonso with seven races remaining.

It was his 32nd career victory, putting him into a tie with Alonso for fourth on F1's all-time race winners list.

Alonso recorded his fourth consecutive podium appearance at the Italian Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Mark Webber finished third, followed by Felipe Massa of Ferrari, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
