OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The Texas Rangers beat Oakland 5-1 Tuesday and took over sole possession of first place in the AL West.

Martin Perez (9-3) won his sixth consecutive start for the Rangers, who scored three runs in the fifth inning and held the Athletics to a solo run in the first inning.

Perez allowed one run on eight hits over seven innings. Alex Rios and Mitch Moreland added solo home runs to the Rangers' 13-hit attack.

Bartolo Colon (14-6) took the loss on four runs -- one earned -- on eight hits over five innings. Colon committed a critical fielding error in the three-run Texas fifth.

Jed Lowrie drove in Oakland's only run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
