MLB announces 2013 playoff schedule

NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The Major League Baseball playoffs, barring weather issues, will finish before the end of October this year.

MLB officials on Tuesday released the playoff schedule with Game 7 of the 2013 World Series penciled in for Oct. 31 -- if the series goes that far and weather doesn't push it into November.

Ten teams -- three division winners and the two teams with the next-best records from each league -- advance to the playoffs. The non-division winners -- wild-card teams -- meet in a one-game playoff to get into the Division round of the playoffs.

The regular season ends Sept. 29 and the National League wild-card game is scheduled for Oct. 1 with the American League wild-card contest set for Oct. 2.

The National League Division Series is to start Oct. 3 and the ALDS begins Oct. 4. The National League Championship Series would begin Oct. 11, one day before the American League decides its World Series entrant.

The 109th World Series is to start Oct. 23 in the home stadium of the AL champion. Home field advantage was determined by the 3-0 American League win in the All-Star Game.
