Stephens reaches New Haven quarterfinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Sloane Stephens survived in three sets Wednesday to earn a quarterfinal berth at the New Haven Open as she makes a bid for her first WTA Tour title.

The 20-year-old American defeated Julia Goerges 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to set up a meeting with fourth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Karin Knapp in one of five second-round matches played Wednesday at the U.S. Open tine-up.

No. 3 seed Petra Kvitova also advanced with a win over Allison Riske 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3. Kvitova will next take on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who won her second-round match Tuesday.

Another quarterfinal matchup was created with victories by Ekaterina Makarova and Simona Halep.

Makarova advanced past top-seeded Sara Errani 7-5, 6-1 and Halep defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
