SAN DIEGO, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Francisco Liriano struck out 13 over seven shutout innings for his 14th win Monday and National League Central-leading Pittsburgh downed San Diego 3-1.

Liriano (14-5) notched his fifth win in six starts, stifling the Padres on four hits while walking two. The left-hander tossed 66-of-104 pitches for strikes as the Bucs retained their hold on the division lead by one game over St. Louis.

Justin Wilson threw a scoreless eighth inning and Mark Melancon nailed down his eighth save despite yielding a run in the ninth for Pittsburgh, which won the first of a three-game series.

The Pirates grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run error by San Diego right-fielder Chris Denorfia and Pedro Alvarez added solo homer in the sixth for the winners.

Andrew Cashner (8-8) was the loser despite allowing just one earned run on five hits over seven innings. He walked two and fanned three.

Nick Hundley delivered the Padres' only RBI.
