SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Chris Wondolowski scored the game's only goal in the 55th minute Sunday, lifting the San Jose Earthquakes over Sporting Kansas City 1-0.

On the play, Steven Beitashour lofted a chip into the area in front of the net and Wondolowski got a head on it, directing the ball into the bottom right corner for his eighth goal of the year.

The Earthquakes (9-10-6) kept their Western Conference playoff hopes alive with a victory following a 2-0 loss at Vancouver last week.

Kansas City (11-8-6), meanwhile, remained in a tie for New York for the top spot in the East.
