BROOKLYN, Mich., Aug. 18 (UPI) --
Pole-sitter Joey Logano grabbed a late lead Sunday and held on to win the Pure Michigan 400, boosting his Chase for the Sprint Cup champion hopes.
Logano bypassed then-leader Mark Martin with less than four laps to go after Martin ran out of fuel, then held off Kevin Harvick down the stretch to post 1-second triumph.
With his third career Sprint Cup Series victory and first since June 2012, Penske Racing's Logano jumped from 16th to 13th in the point standings with just three races to go before the start of the Chase.
Finishing third at Michigan International Speedway was Kurt Busch, followed by Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer.
Waltrip Racing's Martin ended up in 27th, while current points leader Jimmie Johnson settled for 40th after sustaining and engine failure in the early going.
