Logano qualifies first in Michigan Sprint Cup race

BROOKLYN, Mich., Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Joey Logano set a qualifying record to win the pole Friday for Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

Logano turned a lap in 203.949 miles per hour to win his first pole of the season. It is the sixth of his career.

He is 16th in the points standings with four races left in which to qualify for the Chase for the Championship. Logano is looking for his first win of the season.

Kurt Busch had the second-best qualifying time at 203.695 mph, followed by points leader Jimmie Johnson at 203.470.

Each of the first three broke the old qualifying record of 203.241 mph set last year by Marcos Ambrose.

The rest of the Top 10 qualifiers were Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Juan Pablo Montoya, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Busch, who won last week's race at Watkins Glen.
