'Refrigerator' Perry tells fans: I'm alive

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Former Chicago Bears star William "Refrigerator" Perry confirmed Wednesday via Twitter rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated.

Perry's agent, Adam Plotkin, told the Chicago Tribune the story apparently started because someone else with the same name actually did die. Plotkin said Perry's brother, Michael Dean Perry, who also played in the NFL, got a call from a reporter about the supposed death.

"I guess someone called Michael Dean and said that someone found out that someone named William Perry died, but it wasn't the Fridge. Someone from Clemson called us as well and said they had been getting a lot of calls and stuff," Plotkin said."He is completely fine."

Perry himself spoke up a few hours later from @FridgePerry72: "I heard the rumors that I passed away online #SMH. Just wanted to let everyone (know) that they are not true and Im doing fine. Thanks guys!"

Perry got his nickname because of his large size. He suffers from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a nervous system disorder that has led to life-threatening bouts of illness, including a five-month hospitalization a few years ago.
