SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana, Scottsdale, Ariz., police said.

Arrest records showed Beasley, 24, was pulled over in the city at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, The Arizona Republic reported.

Officers said they smelled marijuana and discovered narcotics near the driver's area of Beasley's car.

The former second-overall NBA Draft pick was jailed and later released, facing possible drug possession charges.

The arrest comes as police are continuing an investigation of Beasley in connection with an alleged sexual assault at his home in January. No charges have been filed in that case, the newspaper said.

Arizona police in February cited the former Kansas State star for several driving offenses.

Beasley has twice violated the NBA's drug policy, entering a rehab treatment facility in 2009, and was ticketed for possessing marijuana and speeding in a Minneapolis suburb while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2011.

He averaged 10.1 points and 3.1 rebounds over 75 games -- both career lows -- last season, which was his first with the Suns.
