DETROIT, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Max Scherzer improved to 16-1 with 7 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday and the Detroit Tigers won a seventh straight game, 3-0 over the Chicago White Sox.

Scherzer lowered his ERA to 2.85, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out six for the streaking Tigers.

The right-hander tossed 71-of-107 pitches for strikes, becoming the first pitcher to go 16-1 in a season since Roger Clemens did so for the New York Yankees in 2001.

Joaquin Benoit notched his 12th save for American League Central-leading Detroit, which came into the contest ahead of second-place Cleveland by three games.

Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta and newly acquired Julio Iglesias each socked a solo homer in the victory.

John Danks (2-9) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits over seven innings for the reeling White Sox, who dropped a ninth straight.
