Wiebe grabs lead after one round of 3M Championship

BLAINE, Minn., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Newly crowned Senior British Open winner Mark Wiebe shot an 8-under 64 Friday to take the lead after the first round of the 3M Championship.

Wiebe rallied during the final nine holes last week to tie Bernhard Langer at Royal Birkdale and then won what turned out to be a five-hole playoff that stretched over two days.

That victory was Wiebe's fourth on the Champions Tour after he had won twice on the regular PGA circuit.

He turned in a bogey-free round at the TPC-Twin Cities course Friday and owned a one-shot advantage over Kenny Perry and Corey Pavin. Peter Senior, Tom Pernice, John Riegger, Bart Bryant and Jeff Brehaut were all at 66 in a tie for fourth while Colin Montgomerie and Hall Sutton both turned in a 67.
