BOSTON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Cody Ross snapped a seventh-inning deadlock with a solo homer Friday and Arizona held on to edge Boston 7-6.
The Red Sox twice overcame a two-run deficit, but could not work the sort of magic they produced 24 hours earlier when they rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to defeat Seattle.
David Ortiz hit a two-run homer to dig the Red Sox out of an early hole in the first and Stephen Drew hit another two-run blast in the sixth that forged a 6-6 tie.
Ross, however, opened the seventh with a home run to left off Pedro Beato (1-1) and the Diamondbacks fought off a potential Boston rally in the ninth. Ross went 4-for-5 and had three RBI overall. He drove in a run with a single in the third and another with a double in the fifth.
Starter Randall Delgado (4-3) survived six innings for the win, giving up four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Brad Ziegler came on in the ninth and put runners on first and second with one away before getting Shane Victorino on a fly ball to the outfield and Dustin Pedroia on a ground out to end the game. It was Ziegler's sixth save.
