No. 1 seed Azarenka advances in California

CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka rolled to an easy win over Francesca Schiavone Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Southern California Open.

Half the quarterfinal berths were filled with Roberta Vinci, Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur all advancing.

Azarenka was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Schiavone, setting up a quarterfinal meeting with either Urszula Radwanska or Jelena Jankovic. Radwanska and Jankovic will meet in the second round Thursday.

Vinci had little trouble getting past Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-2, Kvitova was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Laura Robson and Stosur ousted Sesil Karatantcheva 6-4, 6-1.

Among the second-round matches Thursday, No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska will take on Daniela Hantuchova.
