Seahawks' Percy Harvin to undergo hip surgery

SEATTLE, July 31 (UPI) -- Newly acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin said Tuesday he will miss an undetermined amount of time for the Seattle Seahawks due to hip surgery.

Harvin, obtained from the Minnesota Vikings during the off-season, wrote on his Twitter account he will be going under the knife to correct the hip problem.

"Nobody was more anxious and excited about season then....but I will be back strong as ever. I appreciate all the love and prayers, 12th man," Harvin wrote.

"When everything is (going) good sometimes life (throws) (you) a curveball. Sorry to (have) to report that my injury will require surgery."

Several published reports indicated the 25-year-old wideout could miss most of the upcoming season while recuperating.

He compiled 677 receiving yards on 62 catches with three touchdowns for the Vikings last season despite playing just nine games due to a severely sprained ankle.

He was also the NFL's top kickoff returner at the time of his ankle injury, averaging 35.9 yards per return.

Meanwhile, Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday fellow receiver Sidney Rice has left training camp for Switzerland for a "non-surgical procedure" on his ailing knee.

Carroll said he was hopeful Rice wouldn't miss any games.
