The IIHF said Edler, 27, -- who plays for the NHL Vancouver Canucks -- will not be allowed to play in Sweden's first two games at next year's tournament in Sochi, Russia, as a result of an injury he caused to the Carolina Hurricanes' Eric Staal, captain of the Canadian team, at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in May, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.
Edler was banned from the remainder of the tournament, which Sweden won.
"The IIHF Disciplinary Committee decided to give Swedish defenseman Alexander Edler an additional two-game suspension for a knee-on-knee hit at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship," the organization said Tuesday.
The IIHF said Edler's action was "reckless, dangerous and in disregard to the vulnerability of his opponent for which he must be held accountable."
