Svitolina makes another WTA semifinal

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 26 (UPI) -- Elina Svitolina gained her second consecutive WTA semifinals berth with an upset win Friday at the Baku Cup tennis tournament in Azerbaijan.

Svitolina, who was a semifinalist last week in Austria, defeated second-seeded Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3. She took 56 percent of the points when Vekic served and finished off half of her 12 break chances.

Svitolina, seeded seventh, goes into Saturday's first semifinal against fourth-seeded Alexandra Cadantu, who edged past Galina Voskoboeva 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in 2 1/2 hours.

Cadantu was good on 69 percent of her first serves but still had 10 double faults. However, she won the match by amassing eight breaks, half of which came in the final set.

The other semifinal pits Shahar Peer against qualifier Magda Linette. Peer had six breaks in a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Tadeja Majeric. She won 60 percent of the points on serve and 58 percent when receiving.

Linette advanced when wild-card entrant Ons Jabeur was injured. Jabeur was ahead 6-3, 4-1 when the match was stopped.

Saturday's meeting will be the first between Peer and Linette. Cadantu owns a 1-0 career mark versus Svitolina.
