UMAG, Croatia, July 24 (UPI) -- Albert Montanes eliminated top-seeded Richard Gasquet in a second-round match Wednesday at the Vegeta Croatia Open tennis tournament.

Montanes had a pair of breaks in each set of a 6-4, 6-4 win over Gasquet. It was the first time in six career meetings that Montanes defeated Gasquet, who is ranked ninth in the world.

Montanes heads into the Friday's quarterfinals against Gael Monfils, who was a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Blaz Kavcic. Monfils lost only five points on serve in the first set and saved the four break-point chances Kavcic had in the second.

No. 3-seeded Fabio Fognini, who won tournaments each of the last two weeks, took out Thiemo de Bakker 7-5, 6-3 in their second-round match. Fognini needed four first-set breaks, however, as he dropped serve three times in the set. He didn't allow de Bakker a break opportunity in the second set, though.

Martin Klizan, the sixth seed, battled for 2 1/2 hours before finishing off a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) decision over Leonardo Mayer. Both players had three breaks in the seesaw final set.
