ATLANTA, July 22 (UPI) -- American compatriots Ryan Harrison and Rhyne Williams each posted a victory Monday, opening first-round play at the BB&T Atlanta Open.

Harrison, seeking his first career ATP Tour title, needed three sets to get past Australia's Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

The 21-year-old now goes on to face Dutchman Igor Sijsling in the second round.

Meanwhile, wild card Williams dispatched fellow American Denis Kudla, 7-5, 6-4.

His next opponent will be the winner of Tuesday's match pitting Australian Lleyton Hewitt and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France.
